Two years ago I got the Elite 7 chirp and was new to sonar units.I had issues right away with he screen freezing when fishing and I fish small lakes that are not very deep.Lowrance had me send unit back and they gave me another.Same thing still happens. They even sent me a new transducer.Same thing. Not sure if the chirp sonar is overkill for the shallow lakes.I Went thru settings and adjustments many times. Not sure if the processer is slow or what on these.See they call these the Hook series now.

The processor is very slow on the pre-Elite-ti units. But still you shouldn't be having those issues, regardless of the depth you fish. I would recommend going to the Lowrance website and check to see what the current firmware version is. Update it if need be, and if that doesn't fix your problem, maybe see if they'll work with you to upgrade to another unit.

Also, to cover the basics, make sure you have at least 12.5v going to the unit, and your connections are secure and free of corrosion.

I did install updated version
..As far as voltage it should operate below 12.5v..That should not be and issue.I had heard the processors were slow on these.Shame I would have to spend more money.I spent a good bit on on it and just to ship the original from Pa. to Ca. to get it replaced last year.

So... Are the Hook series any better than the Elite since it is the same machine from what I see?

They're the same unit. The early Elite units didn't come with CHIRP sonar, but that's where the differences end.
