I've been thinking about a motor connector kit to attach my 40 & my 9.9 tiller together so I can steer the 9.9 from the console.........and have some questions.

If they are connected, can one or the other motor be lifted/trimmed up while the other stays in the down position? - or do you have to raise & lower both motors together? - or disconnect the connecting rod(s)?

I assume that there is some way to lock the throttle on the 9.9 to keep it at a steady speed?

Anyone use this setup? Any comments, thoughts, pros/cons, etc?

OR -- what about a remote set up to steer the 9.9 remotely? Do they also control the throttle? Costs?

Thanks.

Depending on the size of your boat, I would use one of those connectors for the steering (don't know the answer to the tilt thing. Logic dictates that they would function with one motor up, and one down, or folks wouldn't buy it, but logic doesn't always work in business), and a second control box on the console, just mounted lower down. If your 9.9 is electric start, you could have your key switch up there as well. Otherwise, the second control box would control just throttle and shifting.

Separate steering will involve another whole steering system, as well as a throttle/shift cable/control box (big bucks). I have, however, seen where a separate steering system on larger boats with kickers is used, and instead of having it on the helm, it is a smaller wheel on the transom, since you troll with lines out the back anyway.

Thanks for your thoughts Bassboy & Ben.

I was thinking to just keep it simple. Connect the two motors, steer from the console. Motor speed, starting, etc. would still be done at the motor. As long as I'm not alone in the boat, one person could handle starting/stopping and speed and the ther could steer. The problem we have is the 9.9 is difficult to hold the tiller, keep the throttle even and steer while tryying to hold a fishing pole as well - also, the 40 hp is in the way of where you have to sit to run the 9.9.

If the connecting set up allows for independant use of either motor - it would work fine for us.

Have you walked through a boat dealer and checked to see if they have set ups like that?May give you some ideas.Marinas and boat shows are help full also.

Nope, I was just curious to see if any Tinboaters had an opinion or could offer some advice. A guy told me it would be a good idea to connect both motors together for flexibility when trolling, etc. - just thought I'd ask for some insight here on TinBoats to learn more about the topic........ Just looking for some information and advice....

Check the boat or motor forums of Walleye Central. Most guys with big boats are running setups similar to yours and could probably help.

 My brothers 5hp kicker is connected to his main motor. A single rod connects the two together. Pretty simple setup. Starting and speed controls are still at the kicker motor. He also put a T- fitting from the main fuel cell to both motors.

Already installed the T-connector for the gas line, that works great. Looking for where to get (what company, brand, cost, etc.,) for the connecting rod to use between the two motors????
