I just got a 1436 john boat the guy I bought it from duck hunted out of it and did a few mods his self but im planning on guting the boat. I have a 1986 mercury 25 h.p waiting for me to buy at my work. The only problem is that it is stick steered. I have not a clue on how to modify my boat for stick shift and how high the deck should be for stabilty. I am going to build some float pods at my work and probally make a jack plate for the motor when the time comes.

I don't know. The guy before me had a 20 on it and he beefed up the transon. I don't have a clue who the boat is made by everything is sprayed over.

Looks like a duracraft or alumacraft. I think installing controls and stick first will give you better idea as to size of deck so it won't interfere while running over the water. Good Luck! 8)

Thanks im going to need all the help I can get. I think im going to use alumain instead of wood for the decking to keep the boat lighter. im going to put the driver seat low as I can for balance.

When I replaced the transom on my 1436 jon I added a 1"x6" oak board so that I could run a 25hp motor. I also moved the fuel tank up front to help balance out the boat.

Thanks for the advice. There is 3/4 piece of plywood in it now and a bigger metal plate. Did you have to put float pods on yours. Im mostly going to use it for river fishing where the channel is not we'll defined. Im open to all advice I want this boat to be to be safe as possibly that's why im nervous about buying this 25. I don't know what the boat is rated for.

My transom is 2 layers of 1/2" plywood with the oak 1x6 all glued and screwed together. The motor weighs 105LB and is mounted on a TH Marine mini jacker and I have a Mac's river runner prop guard on the skeg. So far I haven't needed to add pods.

Most 1436's are usually rated for 15hp max. It's not to say you cannot put a 25hp on it (depending on laws of the state and how safe you would feel). It's up to the user to decide to overpower the boat. Weight on the transom may be an issue, but personally, I don't know how much. I'd take a look at boat manufacturers' websites to see what kind of weights and hp their boats are rated for and that should give you a better idea on what you can or "should" do with your boat.

50% of the time I wouldn't run it full power only when I wanted to feel the wind in my hair. Beefing the back in wouldn't be a problem for me to do at work. I just don't want a few inches of the boat to be in the water when im running wide open.

I can and do run WOT a lot. I can chop the power and I don't get any water over the transom.

Ok just found out that im going to have to sell the boat I have another baby on the way and need the money for baby stuff.
