I am stripping, cleaning and restoring a 12’ Aluminum boat. I’ve read on here about the sin of using a carbon steel wire brush on the hull of my boat to remove paint due to oxidation. I also read that if I do use a carbon steel wire wheel I should then use a cleaner such as Ospho ( phosphoric acid) to wash/etch the surface. I also found this product on Total Boat: https://www.totalboat.com/products/aluminum-boat-etch-wash.
My question is even if I use a SS wire brush is it still wise to use either of the two products mentioned above to prep the hull. Or, is this an unnecessary step?
I will be leaving bare aluminum below the water line, and painting above it.
Oh and I’m using Citristrip stripping gel to remove the paint.
TIA
