I have a 1990 15 horse Johnson outboard. I got it from a friend who didn't run it for a few years. I am having some issues with the water pump and the carb I think. I replaced the water pump, and tested it. When I got it started, at a low idle the water indicator would almost spray, instead of shooting a solid stream. Then when I increase the RPMs it shoots a solid stream. I let it idle for awhile, but it will die if I let go of the handle.

The last time I got it started, It wasn't shooting ANY water out, so I killed it. What am I doing wrong? And do I need to get the carb worked on? I am positive that there isn't any blockage in the line, and I have followed all the links on this site and I am unsure where to go now.

I would rebuild the carb. Go back & double check that the tube going from the water pump to the power head inside the mid section is aligned. You should have a nice stream at idle.

Please get a manual, believe me it worth the 30bucks and you have an excellent resource with specs and diagrams.

Oh by the way, I would put a fresh set of spark plugs on that motor even the ones on look ok. Make sure the vent valve on the tank is open during operation. Always use a fresh gas oil mix, even if the gas is about less than couple of months. You can put the old gas in the lawn mower it won't care

I believe a carburetor cleaning is due. Don't let the carb cleaner touch any of the plastic piece, it will destroy them.

The iboats links have alot of good information on water pump/impeller changing and lower unit gear oil change.

Gear oil should be replaced each season with marine grade gear oil
