I need to mount a rod holder on the side of my jon boat near the location where I sit, but am wondering about the best approach to take and type of holder to use.

As shown in the picture, this is a 1448 with sides that flare out at an angle and a gunnel that is barrel-shaped (rounded).

Would appreciate some fast suggestions! I'm headed "to town" today and want to try and pick one up while I'm there.

By the way, the photo auto-rotated for some reason when I uploaded it, so it looks a little odd, but just picture it rotated 90 degrees to the right.

Cheapest and easiest would be to get some 1.5" PVC and just zip tie it around the rib where your wires are running. Beyond that, whatever WalMart has in stock.

Here is what I did on my 10 ft Jon and 14ft V Hull: I used Scotty mounts and holders. I made a backing plate the same size as the rod holder mount out of an old plastic cutting board, and then screwed this to the 14ft with SS hardware. You could use lumber ( I would seal it) and do the same thing. On my Jon boat I cut a piece of 3/4" wood slightly bigger than the rod holder and then srewed the mount to the board. I then attach the board to the boat using a couple of small C clamps. I'm sure there are more, and possibly better ways, but this is what I did.

On my boat I added 4 more oar locks to the side of the boat, front and back and used a tee bar with 4 rod holders in them. You can fish from the sides or off the front like a spider setup or off the back for trolling.

Yes, Driftmaster makes an assortment of different styles of rod holders and trolling setups for different types of fishing. I have mine setup for crappie trolling but I only use 4 rods right now as that usually keeps me busy enough.

Ace, I guess for the most part they are, but I use them for catfish and sand bass(white bass) too. I usually catch catfish under 12 lbs and they are good for that size.
