Ok Waterwings
I have a few ?'s for you if you would be so kind to help.
1)a/f or m/f ?
2)favorite ISO to use? F /setting ?
3) Lighting is always perfect light meter or Edit ?
4) How are you adding signature that blends in ? that is cool..........
5) Do you save your pixs. as just j peg or j peg and raw? The reason i ask is i know someone that says raw is the best way to edit them as you can Edit ISO and F setting never tried it.
I am just a novice looking to learn.I know that no one wants to let their secrets out ,but just asking?????
Thanks
mike
Just a rookie here also Mike, as I've only had this camera since Christmas, but learning
slowly as I go, lol. I've deleted a lot of shots, but that's okay when shooting digital.....no expensive film wasted.
1) Most of the time (99.9%) I'm in auto focus.
2) Still working on the ISO, but am trying it at 200. Some of the shots I took at city park Saturday were auto- etering at 1000 ISO, so had to change that. The f stop I'm still working on also, but have gone and set it low in an attempt to get the background to blur. It's a lot easier if using a camera that has a manual f-ring, which this D3000 doesn't. Have to go into the programs and set it manually.
3) I pretty much leave the camera in Auto White Balance and D-Lighting on, the D-Lighting will give the pics some/a lot of grain in higher ISO's. From what I understand and read, D-Lighting is good on sunny days to add some light to the shadows. I do quite a bit of post-processing, mainly using brightness/contrast, and have recently started messing with the Curves for color/lighting changes. I also use the Unsharpen Mask feature quite a bit. It's in the Filters (Enhance section) in Gimp. Oh, and I always click on the "preview" mode so that I can go the UnDo feature in the Edit menu and get rid of anything I've done and return to the original shot.
4) The signature, which still gives me fits occasionally is done using the Text button in Gimp. Select the font, size, and then type your name, etc. Then I drag it into the photo where I want it and save.
5) From what I understand, shooting in RAW (NEF for Nikon) is the best method for post-processing, but uses a lot of bytes on the memory card. When I went to take the shots Saturday I had the camera set in RAW (NEF), but changed it once I got out there. I shoot everything in Jpeg. My memory card is 2gb, and am going to get a 4gb or probably an 8gb possibly. What I should do is get another battery, but waiting for now as they're around $58 from Nikon. I don't plan on using and off-brand battery in the camera.
Also, I've joined two photo sites, and they have lots of info on them: https://www.digi-darkroom.com (based in the UK), and https://www.photozo.com (members have 10gb of storage there for a personal gallery & posting). Using Photobucket as on-line storage also, but really need to get an external hard-drive for backup. Right now everything is on my computer. Hope my explanations above helped, but still learning myself.
