smart craft plug on control box?

i have a mercury control box that has the normal 5 wires but it also has a bigger plug that has a cap on it that says smart craft. i have no idea what this is for because i though to use a smart craft gauges i needed to come off the harness on the engine. if someone has any experience that would be great.
