Hello,

I recently purchased my first boat, it’s a 16’ Xpress Aluma Weld with a 2001 DF15 15hp Suzuki 4 stroke with low hours (25hrs). I had it inspected and maintenance and the technician said everything was perfect. It has an electric start and usually takes 4 tries to start up. My issue is that it doesn’t seem to idle well if at all. If I turn the throttle to the lowest point, the motor cuts off. I have to keep giving it gas when I slow down or finesse it to a certain throttle level. I’m a newbie and am wondering if this is suppose to happen, if so, what is the reason for this. If not, am I doing something wrong or missing something.

Any advice on this I would greatly appreciate!!

Best Regards,

Zeppelin

It may be idling too low or the carb may be dirty. Without knowing how may RPMs it is trying to idle at we don't have enough info. My just be a simple adjustment.

With any new engine it is wise to go over all of the essentials. Fuel system, cooling system, ignition system, and maint. of these systems and the engine itself.
The idle circuits in the small 4-strokes are tiny.....and I mean tiny. It would not take much to restrict it. I would purchase an OEM kit and thoroughly clean it.
New water pump assembly, gear lube, fuel lines, spark plugs, and lubricate all lube points would be in your best interest beyond cleaning the carb.

Thanks for the feed back, nccatfisher and pappy! I’ll definitely go get that OEM kit and get the rpm’s checked out. I just want clarification that with these tillers, even if I put the throttle at a minimal position it should not just be cutting off like that, correct?

I’d bet on the low speed idle jet being plugged. The opening is tiny and plugs easily, and the symptom is not idling or poor idling.

As a simple fix before you start taking things apart.. Try a can of fresh ethanol free fuel with a good amount of seafoam (like 2-3oz per gallon).
The most likely cause is a partially plugged low speed jet ( as mentioned above) and the cleaner might be just enough to get it running properly again.

And don't let your fuel can sit in the sun or a hot tin shed when your not using it.. Try and keep it somewhere cool.

Thanks everyone for the feed back. I put fresh ethanol free gasoline in and learned how to properly cold and warm start it and use of the choke. It ran like a top for 4 hours yesterday with zero issues! I got to idle without stalling at minimum throttle. However the high pitch alarm/buzzer did come after I turned the motor off. I’m trying to find the user manual to what this means. If anyone knows that would be helpful.

Best regards,
