Shopping for a new motor and found that the 40-50-60 HP versions of one brand all weigh the same. So why would anyone buy the 40-50 HP versions when the 60 is so similar, the resale would be better, and it's more versatile? My hull is only rated for 40 HP but as long as the rpms were kept down, the boat would never know. Especially with so many people trying to convert 9.9 and 15's to 18's and 25's, I'd be ahead of the curve to start with.

The 40-60hp Etecs are pretty much the same.

To answer the OP's question: insurance companies require hull ratings to be followed, many dealers won't fit a boat with hp over the hull rating, and some states' LEOs take the ratings pretty serious...

I assume the HP rating is the safe limit to operate any particular boat. I don't know what considerations go into determining the safe limit, but a 60HP is 50% more power than a 40HP. That seems like a lot to me and in the case of an accident/incident the insurance company could (would?) refuse to cover. I would think there could be some serious liability issues as well.

Suzuki . . . it appears their 40's and 50's are just de-tuned 60's all else being equal.

To ALL,

Here in Texas, get caught by Game Wardens, Park Police, Lake Patrols, FWD Police, Marine Police, the Coast Guard and/or the DPS & you "will soon learn" what the difference is in "abiding by" versus "violating" the USCG requirements on HP is: About $ 500.oo + court costs out of your back pocket.
(IF the officer believes that your OB is "relabeled" and/or "hopped up", expect "a through inspection" of the OB. = A friend of mine from Houston recently paid a 300.oo+ fine for "upgrading" a 9.9HP engine to 15HP on a "not to exceed 10HP waterway".)

The USCG rating is WISE & over-powering a hull is (pardon me for speaking frankly): MORONIC.

just my opinion, satx
