Hey I am new to tinboats but hope someone can give advice. I have a 1993 Misty River 16' aluminum boat with a new 30 hp Evinrude etec. I just replaced the old 83 Johnson 35 seahorse. My concern is when trailering my boat I will not be able to remove the etec as it is bolted onto the transom, unlike the old Johnson which I would unclamp and lay on the wooden floor of the boat when trailering. I always wondered if going over potholes and bumps with the motor mounted on the transom would cause problems, so I always used to remove the motor from the transom when trailering just for peace of mind.
The 16' Misty river is a great boat, very well built and never leaked a drop of water since I bought it in 94. The transom appears to be in good shape, the id plate says the boat is rated for 40 hp. But now I'm worried that when I hit the road for a fishing trip and I'm traveling on some bumpy roads with the 175 pound Evinrude bolted to the transom and bouncing around is there any concern that structural damage to my transom is possible? This is something I've wondered about for a long time and I would love to hear some advice from others. Thanks.

Get a transom saver bar; here is a pick of one on a bass boat but you'll get the idea.

They come in many styles and lengths to fit multiple applications.

Thanks for the quick replies I think a transom saver is the answer, but still I'm curious if a transom saver is actually even needed. I will probably get one just for peace of mind, but has anyone ever heard of transom damage occurring because the weight of the outboard attached to the transom on bumpy roads? I know the transom is strong enough to handle 40 hp pushing and twisting on it during normal use, would bumps on the roads cause greater forces than that and does it happen a lot? Like I said this is something I've wondered about for a long time but I've never heard of it actually happening to anyone I know :?: .
