Saw where you can buy a 101 minn kota lower unit for 200 and some change. My question is can you run straight 36v directly to it. Just need it to run wide open.

I waited hoping someone else more knowledgeable than I to answer, but I guess not. I looked for a schematic of the Minn Kota motor and found several. Most had more than 2 wires running up the shaft to the controller in the head. If this is the case then the answer is probably not. If by chance this unit only has 2 wires then I would say most likely: Yes. My background in electronics tells me that a three or four wire motor has something going on in the motor that controls speed, or works with the controller to control the speed.

If you can, check how many wires the power head has before you buy it.

And where are you finding a 101 Lb power head for $200?

I've only ran 12v, so I'm ignorant about your question. I only deal in two wires up the shat. However, Clint seems to know there are more wires involved. Maybe other wires for other applications for a 36v., I have no idea. But it stands to reason the secondary wires might be only for voltage control or something similar. I'm thinking maybe one of two things: Primary wires may work alone, or it may be the secondary wires might be patched into the primary wires to work. Either way, the addition of a heavy duty rheostat may be a solution.

but what do I know? :LOL2:

Multi wire are generally analog control. 1 wire for each speed. Digital control would have less. The motor wont last long without the controller. Digital controllers will shut down at low voltage. Low voltage burns stuff up...

There are three wires up the shaft. Black which is motor (-) red which is motor(+) and which is an equipment ground. I am no expert on dc brushed motors however I do know a little bit. I don't see where it wouldn't work but at the same time I would think that being it is so cheap if it worked so well then everyone would have them, and that's what gets me worried. I thank everyone for their responses. Might just have to try and see!
