What all do I need to hook up a transom mount trolling motor? In the past I have always used the motor leads direct to battery, but from some of the stuff I have read on here thats not so great. Small boat and just concerned about trolling motor and battery right now. I will hook up fishfinder and nav lights to a different smaller battery later. It is a 55lbs thrust minn kota. All opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :) Sounds like a need a circ. breaker? are those easy to hook up?

That is the only way I have ever done it. Never had a problem. I am working on a 16' boat now. I will run cables this time, only because I want to the option of running from the front or rear.

If you are using the aligator clips with close proximity to battery, that is exposed, you are fine. If you change to ring terminals or put below decks, add a re-setable circuit breaker near the positive terminal.
