What are these boxes called?

Hi everybody, I am new here. I am looking at a 16 foot jon boat that I would like to add boxes on the side instead of a bench that crosses from one side to the next. The boat needs more seats. I have found a picture online (the pic is not the boat that I am going to get) that is attached. The boxes that I am talking about are circles in blue in the picture.

What I need to know is what they are called, and where to get ones that aren't expensive. Can I buy some and just rivet them to the support beams instead of welding them or riveting them through the hull? I would rather not pay to have them welded or rivet them through the hull.

I'm not really sure if there is a name for them and I have never seen them for sale. The ones I have seen were created by removing the center of an existing seat to create a pass through. I'm sure you could have some fabricated. Good luck.

I presume the boat the OP is considering already has a bench in the desired position?

If there is an existing bench in that boat: My concern about just cutting a pass-through an existing bench is altering the lateral strength of the hull. I think those benches provide a fair amount of rigidity to the hull. I've considered doing that to my V-hull tinny, but the structural integrity risk stopped me. I converted my middle bench into a battery box.

If there's no bench now in the position where the seats are desired, a simple plywood box of 1/2" ply for each side could provide the desired seats and added storage. DIY aluminum could also be done, but at greater cost. If you can't fabricate a DIY solution, be prepared to pay, unless you have a friend with the ability and willingness to do the work.

War Eagle calls them half dry storage boxes, I would think it would probably be cheaper to build them than to buy them if you can fabricate them yourself and then get someone to do welding if needed.

Matching the rib spacing, floor angle, and the side angles of the boat, at the place you would like to install them, probably calls for custom (DIY) anyway.

Unless you’re going in and out of Haulover inlet the bench seats aren’t really necessary.

Lots of people cut them out, myself included.

I wouldn’t weld something like this anyway. Good rivets and a dolly for bending, would work or you could plan it out and have them bent at a sheet metal shop.
