I am unsure what size trolling motor i am goin with. Boat is 14 ft aluminum v hull. Bought a 36 lb but thinking i need a 55 lb, thoughts. Also is running 16 ft of 8 awg sufficent or do i need 6 awg? In addition the 36 lb calls for a 40 amp circuit breaker, i already have a 60 amp, can i safely use the 60 amp or should i go get a 40 amp, 50 amp if i go 55 lbs.
Please any insight is appreicated as this is my 1st time wiring up a boat. Thanks.

I assume your are talking about a bow mounted trolling motor because of the wiring Extension. A 55lb will work well with most 16’ tinnies. I have used 45lb on 16’ Jon boat to good effect. A 36lb might be too small, depending on boat, conditions, and how you use it.

Minnkota has a wiring guide on their website. It lrecommends breaker size, and wire size, based on length, and trolling motor size. I think for your length and 55lb motor it will be 4awg wire and 60amp breaker. I don’t recall for a 36lb but 8awg might be fine.

Goin to be stern mount. This is just a 14ft vhull used to take the kids out on the weekends, not tons of fishing but some. Basically want to use on some non powered lakes and as a back up if the old mercury gives any issues. Im guessing boat, people and gear total weight might be 1500 lbs at most
