Recently obtained a crestlier with an older motorguide bow mount with pedal control. Have replaced some parts and finally took it out for a spin this week. I found the foot pedal tobe very difficult to operate, stiff, unresponsiv and when it did move the changes were big not subtle. Removed it from the deck and now am wondering about replacing it with a remote controlled model or I have just seen a remote controlled transom model. Any suggestions? Btw am on a limited budget so will likely be a haswing which I have on another boat as well.

Sounds like you have an old cable steer on your crestliner. Somebody probably knows the ins and outs of adjusting and fxing those.

The mainstream trolling motors can't price compete with the Chinese Haswing and Water Snake. I haven't seen much in "real" world reviews on them.

Your experience was just like mine. An old Motorguide 43# thrust TM with foot pedal control. Impossible to effectively control with the foot pedal. That's probably more a knock on previous owners who failed to lube the control cables.

I replaced mine with a Minn Kota Powerdrive. Eventually added a ProNav system that allows either remote control from smart device, a fob, or the original Minn Kota foot pedal. The whole setup was about $1800 new.

If new isn't in the budget, then I think keeping an eye out for a used unit is probably your option. Watch Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Craigslist for used units. Since Christmas is coming up, I think there are likely to be a number of used units hitting the market as users receive new units as gifts.
