    preparation for repainting

I like to use mineral spirits to de-grease the surface prior to primer/paint. I wipe it on with a clean cloth and then dry it with a separate clean cloth, then let it sit for maybe 30 minutes before painting. Sometimes I'll used compressed air if there are little nooks and crannies that need...

    Leak solutions?

I had a mid 80s basstracker that had similar cracks in the hull, as well as three or four cracked ribs. I cleaned up the spots really really well with a stainless steel wire wheel on an angle grinder ... both sides if possible. I took it to a local 4x4 offroad shop that I take my Jeeps to...

Mine is sitting in a tent barn surrounded by lawn mowers, kids bikes, empty fuel cans and all the other warm weather stuff. Is it spring yet!?!?!?!?!?!?

What boat? Thickness of Alum? Hp?

Welcome to TinBoats!! Are you only interested in new boats? If you would consider a used boat, there are a TON of used 1648 flat front jon boats floating around. They are usually pretty cheap. If you can find one that already has a motor, you can sell the motor and use your new one .... if...

2013 Whitetail Bow Season... Git Sum!

Archery season for Doe opened in mid September where I'm at in southern PA, and archery buck just opened last Saturday. I got a mid size doe the other day in my back yard while still wearing my dress shoes and pants ..... I was eating dinner with the family when 4 nice deer walked out of the...

Bass Fishing on the St. Lawrence River - Labor Day Weekend

We took a short weekend trip up to the St. Lawrence river to try and catch some pike and walleye. Well, the ridiculously clear water meant the walleye were way too deep to fish for, at least with our equipment. The pike were nowhere to be found ... most likely down deep chasing the walleye...

    Canadian Trip Report

For our annual trip, I rented an RV for the crew and we went back to Happy Day Lodge on Lake Windermere in Ontario, just west of Chapleau. I took my 85 year old grandfather, my 15 year old cousin, and two of my buddies who haven't fished much and have never done anything like this before. Due...

    14ft lowe jon boat

If I were selling that boat, I'd list it at $2,200 and hope to get somewhere around $1,800 for it. If I were buying it to re-sell for profit, I'd want to get it for under $1000. If I were buying it to keep and use, I'd be willing to spend $1,500. So I guess a good market value is right around...

favored online retailer for boat & marine supplies?

We have a Prime membership to Amazon so I get free next day shipping on TONS of stuff. I was surprised at how many boating and fishing related things they have. I got fuse panels, plugs, rod holders, wire, bilge pump, aerator, battery boxes, navigation lights, and a bunch more stuff. Heck...

Draft difference: Flat bottom vs. Mod Vee

How fast do you need to go? There are some really light weight, but low HP, motors out there that wouldn't drop the rear of your boat at all. Granted, they won't plane you out ... but they won't stick your bow way up in the air either. Max speed would be around 5mph.

    stability for a 1448 jon

From looking at your picture, the boat behind that awesome catfish looks a bit skinny to be a 1448. I could be wrong though. Like others have said, a full 48" bottom should be really really stable. Regardless, if you need more stability, the best thing to do is really get a bigger boat...

Smokercraft, broken cross supports and small leaks Q (pics)

Sharp looking boat you have there, but unfortunately it needs some major attention. More than likely, you could run your 9.9 on there for the summer and the boat would hold together. It will leak, flex, and maybe develop more leaks and possibly some cracks .... but I don't think it will fall...

    jon boats stability

I've had a ton of boats and can say with confidence that a 48" bottom is MUCH more stable than a 36" bottom. A heavy duty 1436 with high sides is OK for a few guys to fish from ... even standing .... but a 1448 is night and day better. The typical little 1436 and 1236 jon boats with short...

    New to TinBoats

Welcome!!!! =D> Awesome looking boat .... perfect for a project. I imagine you've already looked, but there is usually a manufactures tag somewhere on the hull. But with older boats, all bets are off. It loos like it could be a Starcraft, but I'm no expert.

Draft difference: Flat bottom vs. Mod Vee

I can't answer all your questions, but here is what I do know. You don't need a tunnel hull. A regular mod-v jon boat seems to be the hull of choice for jet rigs. 14' with a jet would be just fine. 16' is preferred just due to the extra space, but if you don't need/want the space, 14 is just...

10 ft Sears jon boat modification?'s

It would help a lot to see some pictures. Can you post some. Generally, moving seats around won't hurt the integrity of the boat .... especially if you are adding additional bracing, decking, or flooring.
