    Sealants

I read somewhere that automotive sealants such as Permatex Form-a-gasket would destroy the metal in OB casings. Any truth to that?

    Torquing the flywheel nut.

Any tips on holding the flywheel still while torquing the nut on a 56 "J" 10 horse?

    Ethanol free fuel question.

I have recently located a local source of ethanol free gasoline. Do I still need a fuel stabilizer?

    Head bolt question.

Preparing to reinstall the head on my 56 Johnson 10 horse and noticed something odd about the original bolts. Initially, I thought they had been painted aluminum color but even acetone wouldn't dissolve it. They are steel bolts, but it appears to be some form of aluminumized plating. That's just...

    Crankshaft/Piston Binding Problem

I have been rebuilding my 1956 Johnson 10hp from top to bottom over the winter as time permitted. I got the crankcase cover installed today and ran into an issue when trying to rotate the crankshaft. Upper piston will rise in the cylinder when the crankshaft, but binds when the top of the piston...

    Shift rod connector question.

When connecting the shift rod halves, should the connector bolts be tightened only until tight or until the gaps in the connector are closed?

    Spaghetti gasket source.

Anyone know of an online source for spaghetti gasket (309044) that sells by the foot. I hate spending $30 for a 50 foot roll when I only need a foot or so.

    Lower unit issue.

Took the new Jon boat yesterday powered by the 56 Johnson 10hp that I have been working on the last 2 months. All went well with the motor with one exception. Any time I opened past half throttle, the lower unit popped out of gear. Same for forward or reverse. I didn't encounter this in the test...

Is there a trick to setting the points on a 56 Johnson 10 hp

With the flywheel off, I set the point cam follower block at the high point of the timing cam and set the point gap to .020. However, after I install the flywheel and torque it down, the point gaps are way off. So, I go to reset the points through the service holes on the top of the flywheel...

    Flywheel shearing off woodruff key.

Having an issue with the crankshaft woodruff key being shared off by the flywheel on my 56 Johnson 10 horse. When the key is inserted in the crankshaft slot, it only protrudes about 1/16th inch which is less than half the depth of the slots in the timing Cam and flywheel. Is the OEM version of...

    Battery location.

My new 14 ft. Jon has a spot at the transom that is obviously designed to hold an restrain a battery box. However, the trolling motor is at the front of the boat which is not well designed as a battery location. Can I run wiring from front to back without creating trolling motor problems or...

Looking for suggestions for wiring kill switch functionality into a 1956 Johnson 10 hp o/b.

    Mounting seat pedistal bases.

The "benchs" in my jons boat are more or less fully enclosed. Given that there is no access to the underside of the bench top to install washers and nut, what is the best way to mount pedistal seat bases. I have my doubts that sheet metal screws would hold.

    Trolling motor thrust question.

In your experience, how fast will a 30 pound thrust trolling motor push a 14 foot Jon boat on high speed? How about on the lowest speed?

Garman Plus 4 GPS/Depth finder transponder question.

Opinions please. Best place to mount a transponder. On the transom or the trolling motor which is mounted on the transom to?

    Restoring a 1956 Johnson 10hp.

I'm in the process of restoring an old Johnson 10 hp. Disassembly, inspection, cleaning, parts procurement and machine work is completed or wrapping up and I'm beginning the assembly process. Hope to use this thread for advise and assistance in putting this beast back together again.

Had hoped to avoid this like the plague.

Checked compression in my 56 Johnson 10 horse today. Not good. Compression was 40 in the upper cylinder and 35 in the lower. Sounds like a complete power head overhaul is in store. Amazing it would even start, but explains why it would only run at medium to high speed. Guess I can kiss the beer...

Now for a really rooky question.

I'm assuming that the prop should rotate one direction for forward, the opposite rotation for reverse and not spin at all in neutral. Is that assumption correct?
