I need help fellas. My 1978 6hp evinrude was not peeing water out and therefore not cooling itself. So I disassembled the lower unit and replaced the impeller in the water pump. When I went to reassemble the lower unit I noticed I still had a (flat-black rubber o-ring) that needed to go somewhere and for the life of me I cannot remember where it came from! Did it come from inside the pump housing? Either on top or bottom of the metal pump plate? Could it have been from the top of the drive shaft where the shaft seats back into upper unit? I also removed the propeller, could I have taken it from there? If anyone has ever owned this model and changed the impeller can remember I would be very happy if you could help!
Thanks...Lanny

Thanks Mike,
There is only 1 tube, and that is for the water. I'm sure it didnt come from that. I even went as far as putting the o-ring on top of the metal housing plate right under the impeller. But after i put the housing back on and tighten it down, I couldnt get the drive shaft to turn by hand like i can when its not under the metal plate.

Normally on the older OMC motors there is a o-ring on the upper end of the shaft where it seats into the bottom of the power head. Below the gear part should be a small recess cut in the shaft for the O-ring.

Flintcreek.

Flintcreek,

Ive seen the recess that your talking about by shining a flashlight up there.
I looked at the diagram for this model number and it says that should be a washer. You cant reach up there...and if i put o-ring on top of drive shaft(just above the pin), then i dont know how i would seat the pin in upper unit? Just doesnt seem right.

Upon looking at the diagram more...I noticed a o-ring does belong after the drive pin of the propeller assembly. And like I said...I did disassemble the propeller also.
Any thoughts?

Actually, the recess he is talking about is on the shaft. The very top of the shaft has splines, which engage in the bottom of the crank. Between the splines and the smooth part of the shaft, there will be a little groove, around the shaft. The ring goes there. Let me know if you need a picture.
