Season Three Finale:
This fall has been the story of very low and clear water. Sept was low, October lower, and now mid-November, the lowest. About a 1/2 foot lower than October. On the first day, we tried a ramp and couldn't float the boat off the trailer. That would be with some good level of pushing, too. Wiped out a tail light and bent the lic plate bracket. That confined us to one ramp, and one area for the three days.
We normally go thru 7-8 gallons of gas when we have full rein of the river, and only went thru that for the full three days.
Water temps started at 46 degrees and dropped a degree or two each day. Day 1 was no wind and bluebird skys. The water clarity was such that you could see bottom in 10' of water. Air temps started at freezing and made it to high 50's. Day 2 was overcast and high of 45, with some breeze on the water. Day 3 was a mix of sun and clouds but had some wind to break the clarity, high of 50. Overall, pleasent weather for mid-November.
Each day we did better than the day before with smallmouths. It is a treat to be able to see them all the way to the boat. Just over 60 for the three days. Jerk baits with long pauses was the ticket. Caught a couple of small northens and had three smallish muskie break-offs at the boat. Spent some time jigging the deeper holes with tippers, but couldn't find any eyes. Also tried trolling for muskie, but the tighter confines of the shallow water and the poor manoverabilty with a jet made that just an exercise in frustration. I'll post a couple of pictures after my son sends them. He has video clips too, but was unsuccesful in posting them here.
Now to prep the boat for its winters nap.
