89 mercury 35 tach question

can anyone help me understand how to figure out how many "poles" my stator has on a type iv thunderbolt ignition system so I can get a replacement tachometer that will operate properly? done some reading and im not entirely sure how to determine what I need before I go ordering parts before I figure out what I really need
