We picked up a couple crawdad traps this week. We thought we would throw them out on our next camping trip and see if we could catch something worth eating. Has anyone of you done this and what would be a good bait for crawdads? Can't wait to give it a try!

A fish head or cut up fish parts works well for bait. I've got friends that raise crawdads and that's what they use in their traps. Pieces need to be bigger than the mesh of the trap and it's best if the bait is in the middle of the trap.

Any kind of meat will work. I like leftover chicken bones best because they dont smell as bad when they rot.

Theyre also great for catching water snakes in 1-2 fow

you can suspend your bait in an Onion type mesh bag in the center of the trap. Keeps them from snacking from the outside!

Your crawdads are very similar to our redclaw here
We use chicken laying pellets for bait, put a handfull in a piece of old stocking and secure it to the bottom middle of the inside of the trap
We find the best time to catch them is the first 2 hours from sunset, they seem to be more eager to feed then
Chicken works well but the crocs up here love it to and smash our traps
Here's a couple of pics

Nice size on those, what do you do with them primarily? We eat the large ones and use the smaller ones for bait or release them to grow bigger.

In 2007 we had a discussion about this very topic!

WOW - we are all getting old!

We eat them mainly but do use them for bait from time to time
The local grubberment put a bag limit of 30 per person a couple of years ago,at that time it was easy to catch a couple of hundred in an evening at the right time of the year
