first boat

Hey everyone, first post here.

I've been shore fishin for maybe 25 years, since I was a kid. I just found a hell of a deal on a 12 ftv bottom (or modified v? Not a flatbottom) witha 6 horse evinrude. Lets say I know squat about fishin from a boat, which isn't far from the truth. Can someone give me the basics as far as courtesy and equipment? I'll be on lakes and reservoirs, rivers as long as 6 horses will keep me from floating away.

By the way I just got married so don't have much to spend :lol: so just the basics to start with. Thanks

First of all welcome aboard. This link is a good read. Also check out you state's DNR website. They normally have the boating rules for your state. It's a good idea to put your location in your profile. That helps people answer questions that you have. Have fun and be safe.

Welcome and congrats on new boat n motor. Like what gillhunter stated,check with your states DNR to find out local rules,regs and what safety equipment you will need. If you can post up some pics

For your first boat you should budget as much as your wife spends on shoes and purses.

Haha if I get her purse and shoes budget then I will be paddling with a stick, I can't remember the last time she bought either. I take it I need a battery for the engine and a fuel can, is the fuel tank part of the motor?

I'm seriously in the blind here, any thoughts or opinions are welcome

Sometimes the seller will include the tank sometimes not. A 6hp motor most likely won't have electric start so no battery but you will need one for navigation lights if your going to be out after dark and to run and other equipment.

I had the same motor for My first fishin motor.
I used it for a number of years and found it to be a very
reliable motor.
Never had to put anything more than regular maintinence
into it.
In fact, just this last fall, I sold it to My brother for His first
Fishin boat!

Life jackets for all persons plus a throwable
Something to bail the water out with
Whistle or air horn (can type)
Extra bilge plug
Paddle or oar(s)
Current registration
A few basic tools, screwdriver(s), pliers, spark plug wrench, crescent wrench, spare spark plug, extra premix oil, cable ties, tape

That was my first motor too. I never had any trouble with it. Looks like you got a sound rig.
