Well i am wondering if i should do this job myself as i'm thinking of buying a seloc book for my 15hp yamaha and seeing how hard it will be.Has anyone here done a job like this and can tell me what to expect as far as how difficult it will be for me with 0 experience,Or should i let the marine mechanic take care of this one for $150 to $250.This is my personnal motor and don't want to screw it up.Will the seloc books break down every seal and o ring in the lower unit as when i'm in there i want to replace all of them[seals/o rings] and the water pump is brand new so i don't need to replace that.

I am trying to get a good business going and i need to learn the basics of fixing motors like carb jobs and all the other good stuff that goes with it sooner of later as i have no plan to start getting into the internal parts of the engines like pistons or anything like that at least on the motors i will buy and resell as it will cost to much to fix them and try to make any money on them.I have thought of buying a cheap motor on craigslist and tearing it down piece by piece all the way through and then putting it back together to teach myself every aspect of a 2stroke motor, then i will get into 4strokes later as right now the demand for good running 2strokes is a gold mine that i want part of and can do it with very little money to start with.

When i buy motors i try to get them with no problems so i can turn them over fast but if they have good compression all it can be after that most of the time is carb/fuel related or spark on 2 strokes and most of the time it is just a carb job that i need to learn how to do.4 strokes later down the road,ok thanks for any help on the lower unit seals.

I found myself in the same boat (no pun intended). I too occasionally pick up small OB motors cheap, get them running & then sell them at a pretty good profit. In regards to your personal OB & the lower seal unit kit.. I decided to let someone with more experience & know-how tackle it. The guy only charged me $75.00 (plus $25.00 for a seal I didn't have). My advise would be to, get some OB manuals on CD-Rom first (you can get them off Ebay usually pretty cheap-alot cheaper than the original paper manuals) & go from there. But your idea of getting a junk motor cheap & practicing on it to get valuable experience is a sound one. Good luck!

I changed the ones in my Lower unit my self. I had a manual and just started working on it. It wasn't too bad as long as you go slow and pay attention to what you are doing.

It's a piece of cake really. At least regarding the J/E outboards, the Seloc book is adequate for disassembling/reassembling gearcases. Can't imagine they would be different on the Yammy's. Furthermore, take a few pictures as well as mental notes upon dis-assembly, and reassembly will go smoothly.
