I have a 1436 with deck on front and back, I am 200lb my motor is 112lbs, I have a 6 gallon gas tank and battery in the back with me. Do you think a hydrofoil would help me plane faster and at lower speeds, motor is a 4 stroke 15hp mercury. thanks1436-2.jpg1436.jpg

Yes it will plane faster. You will be able to stay on plane at slower speeds. BUT it might limit your top end due to more drag.

I venture to say that your boat is not similar to this one here at all.
This poster has a marginally powered rig with at least 80% of his weight confined to the rear 1/3 of the boat.
I'd be willing to bet a hydrofoil would show marked improvement in the areas he is questioning.

Thanks for the feed back guys, I am looking at getting one to try, But I am curious as to what pods are?

Actually I have a much heavier boat with a 25 hp motor

If you want to try the hydro foil i will ship you my old one - if it works buy it from me = if not ship it back

So you have almost twice the HP and a heavier boat.

How wide?
How long?
Bow type?
Layout?

Best check your math - 25 is not twice 15

Boat is a 16 ft V hull MirroCraft with full fron and rear raised decks, middle deck, three grp 27 batterries two TM (51 and 35 lb stern and bow, 6 gal gas tank, console, w/ hrdo steering

See where I am going with this?

I agree - a tail might help - So I offered him a fast way to find out

OK - so at least we are on the same page.

I thought you posted that the foil would not help......

On a side note the real possibility exists that your "25" is actually more than twice his "15".
Industry standards are +/- 10% correct? Your under-rated "25" could be putting out 27.5 (hence you have no problem planing)
His over-rated "15" is actually 13.5(hence his trouble getting on plane) so twice that would be 27.

Or my engine "could" be running a little off and only putting out 22.3hp - WHO KNOWS!

Anyway, I changed to a four blade prop with a different pitch when the boat got heavy and that helped the most :)

Yup! I did the same thing. I took my foil and rock guard off. Cured a lot of issues. Four blade helped me tremendously.

OK...everybody else is correct.

That said, spend some time thinking about putting the gas and batteries up under the deck and getting some of that weight out of the stern. Think it is ?4 gauge wire used for battery.

Don't know what hose for the gas tank to get. But heck, you have EVERYDARNEDTHING back with you. Make some hatches, you've already got the deck work done. Remember some ventilation holes.

Have fun, be safe.

I wouldn't buy a foil, they are made to look like airplane wings and since water acts nothing like air the thicker cross section slows the boat. Test out a piece of 1/8" aluminum that looks like this and report back.

awesome responses guys , I am still confused lol, a friend near says he has a hydrofoil I can check out I will let you know how it goes. Also I have some weight up front as well there is a battery up front with a bigger deck that has latchs , I also keep all needed things up there sure as lifejackets, tacklebox, paddles, umbrella couple tools, nothing heavy but all adds up I also try to keep my cooler up front too, and the boat will get on a plane and run about 18mph with me and one other person and all that crap. i just like to go faster and be able to ride smoother without having to go full throttle. I probably need to quit complaining I didn't build it to be a speed boat.

thanks again

cheers

I made mine out plexiglass , but it's only a 6hp. Couldn't find anything small enough for a 6hp that I thought wouldn't cause too much drag. Not really a hydrofoil just a bigger anti cavitation plate, it helped out.

My 15 Rude will get 19 mph on the 1448 jon with me 200lbs wife 110lbs trolling motor/batt cooler/ice/packed , 15 lb anchor , rope, tackle, rods and fish cooler w/10 lbs of ice. So I'd say you're in the ball park.
If you want to go faster.......There is no replacement for displacement...... In other words, BIGGER ENGINE= MORE SPEED :LOL2: Want a smoother ride, get a Mod V-hull
