hello I am a new member(about 2mths now) and I love this site. I purchased a new to me boat also about 2mths ago and finally got to take it out for the first time today.I have been lurking around here for awhile and been reading up on everybodys posts. Boy do I have a lot of questions now. Ok so here is my motor question. I have a 1998 Johnson outboard that I got to open up on the lake today. I went by myself and at full throttle the front of the boat lifted up a bit. Is there a way for me to make it plane out more or is that going to happen all the time. I figured with a buddy in the front it will level out a bit but sometimes I fish alone. My Motor has a pin for adjustments. Should I try to adjust it that way? Thanks for any help with this. I attached a pic so you can see were the motor is set at now.

I would try shifting some weight weight forward. If that doesn't help then pull the outboard in one notch on the pin. There will need to be some bow lift at speed to keep the bow from digging into waves. You should still have a clear view over it.

Thanks Ben2go
I figured the weight in the back would be an issue but that is were the battery compartments are located. The guy I purchased the boat from already did the mods so I really can't change that. The transom is 20" so water does not come in at all. So the bow lifting up some should be ok? it was just a little hard to see. also when you say pull the outboard in 1 notch do you mean the propeller towards the transom? Sorry if the questions seem dumb but this is my first outboard on a Jon boat.

Theres about 4 or 5 holes on your motor(tilt),it looks like your out to far(maybe).Try moving the pin in acouple places maybe the second or thrid hole out.The closer the pin is to the stern the more your bow will stay down but going to far and your bow will plow. It's an easy adjustment, find where it runs good and then play alittle with moving weight around.

Yes, move the prop one notch so the prop is closer to the transom. You should have a clear view over the bow of the water. On hard acceleration and up to the point that the hull is on plane, the bow will raise up.Then when the hull gets on plane, the bow should settle lower so you can see the water in front of you. Here is a vid of another members boat on plane. It will give you some idea of how things should look.

I'd say you need to move the motor down to the 2nd whole and try it out that way. I run mine on the 1st or second whole, depending on the load.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will be taking it out next saturday and I will try moving the pin in some and see if that works better. I keep you posted.

I want to thank everyone for their helpful replies. I went out on saturday and set the pin at the second to last hole and the boat planed great. the bow went down enough for me to see and also stayed up enough so i didn't take on water.
