After reading lots of posts about raising motors for best performance, I was wondering if anyone has expereinced any problems with the prop coming out of the water while going over waves? I haven't measured where the cavitation plate is on my 14R but I know it tops out at 23mph with two people fishing gear and trolling motor. I'm not really sure I need want to go faster in it. The cavitation plate on my Lund is 1.5" below the bottom of the transom I'm just not sure if I could go higher and still troll in 4-5' waves. Just looking for some input or past experinces.

It doesn't surprise me that the prop is coming out of the water in 4-5' waves. Now if it was doing this in flat water I would say it is another problem.

4-5 foot waves and a 14' boat...anyways.
Hopefully your stern is always in the water or your going to fast:)

let me clarify the 4-5s are in the lund not the 14r, I don't currently have a problem with the prop leaving the water but I was wondering if I would if i moved the motor up higher as some have recommended for other boats. The 14r was inherited from my gramps and usually only gets used a couple times a year on smaller lakes for nostalgia, sometimes simpler is more fun.

I've owned a lot of boats from 12' jon boats to bayboats to 29'r with twin 300hp suzuki's and I've never had a prop leave the water unless I was doing something that I shouldn't have been doing (going to fast for conditions :) ). I did spin a prop hub once by hitting a wave and the boat came totally out of the water and I couldn't back off the throttle quick enough. Your boat should pivot from the back going over waves thus leaving the motor in the water. If your outboard is coming out of the water going slow, then you are in conditions that you probably shouldn't be in or you have some serious issues.
