That's not as bad as I feared. No real need for it though IMHO ... most boat SS hardware is 304.Maybe $20 or $30 more for 316 for a typical piano hinge 48" in length.

I checked again and some are only $15 more. I don't disagree with you. I'm checking on one to see what type of steel is being used. My reasoning for 316 is for a few bucks more, and the amount of effort to rebuilt this box, I thought it was worth the extra bucks. It's likely I will only be able to find 304. If you can't tell from this thread, I enjoy the research/planning/design phase of a project like this. That's not as bad as I feared. No real need for it though IMHO ... most boat SS hardware is 304.
I found a single-offset stainless steel hinge on ebay. The challenge was finding a steel single-offset. Wasn't cheap, but will last as long as I'll need it.Piano hinges are strong and availiable in many shapes and sizes. Also a variety of materials, in your case they can be had in aluminum or SS. I bought a 48" long heavy duty SS piano hinge for my side x side...not cheap at 54 bucks but very heavy duty and rust free. You would probably be fine with an aluminum one. Lots of different fasteners out there, when you get the design figured out, do your fastener research, lots to choose from !!! Also remember that piano hinges can be cut to whatever length is needed, no need to figure an exact length. Lots of good ideas posted here, let us know what your finnished project looks like !!
