I have a 1542 Alweld Jon boat with a steel trailer. The length of the tongue has always been an issue, so I added a swing away joint (Fulton). I added 5-feet to the tongue and now it seems about perfect. I have seen some videos where they recommend running the safety chain back to the original trailer. That's a long chain run and would seem to me to be unsafe if the trailer came uncoupled. Is there any real reason to not just run the chain behind the coupler as usual? It's not like I'm pulling a 25 ft fiberglass center console.

Thoughts?

Very creative, I like your solution.
I highly recommend you add a connection for your safety chains to be attached to the original trailer. (Maybe weld a strap to the original trailer tube.) They would reach your car when the tongue is short. I don't believe you need chains when launching or at the driveway hill. Just what I would do.
