You ever get fixated on a song and listen over and over?

I've only been playing for about a year. No formal lessons just a lot of practice on specific chords that I'm trying to play. I've never really learned notes or theory becaue that's not what I was going for. Basically what I've done is just go through the chord progressions of whatever song I'm trying to play. For instance, the first song I learned to play was Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town by Pearl Jam. The progression goes from D > G > C > G > C and so on. I just practiced going from D to G and back many many times. Once I got that I practiced going from D to G to C and back. Eventually it all ties together and your muscle memory kicks in and your good to go. Also your hands will get used to using muscles you otherwise don't use and the soreness should subside. The arthritis might be a bit of a buger for you though. Not sure what your trying to get out of playing, but I'm just doing it to entertain myself and friends and basically learn to play songs I like. I'm far from good but have surprised the heck out of even myself how well I can play now, especially after the first few days when it felt like a lost cause.

There is a ton of usefull videos on YouTube if your trying to learn specific songs. I'd also suggest learning how to read tab which is how most of these songs are written out. I used websites like justinguitar.com, which has very usefull beginner lessons and I'd suggest going through the first few. After I started to get the hang of things I found it more fun and fulfilling to just learn the way I described above.

You have to practice, practice, practice and your finger tips will toughen up, especially if you use metal strings.

My son played guitar in the high school jazz band and in a heavy metal band during college and later years. He started out with private lessons at a local music store, twice a week, and really took off from there to studying theory, etc.

I can play a few chords and licks, but am nowhere near the same level as my son. The main thing is to have fun!

It's been alot of Aaron Lewis at our house lately. I am also learning to play guitar. All books and internet help so far. Can't wait for the fingers to toughen up!!

Agree with this. Shouldn't take to long for the finger tips to toughen up either. Worst part for me is my finger tips are so calloused I don't have the same feel I used to when I pick my nose :shock:

IMO, books and internet is all you need if your not trying to get into theory or anything like that. There is a TON of usefull information on the internet to help you get the basics down and build a decent foundation to go on.
