update: got the new foam in and new wiring ran to the Nav lights, bilge, and baitwell. Now I just riveting everything back up so I can begin working on the actual floor and carpet.

Well ended up pulling the floor to replace the foam an it turned out for the best because the PO had put in an unsealed floor and carpeted it. At least it lets me rewire everything and customize the floor layout.

Thank guys I think I got it figured out. From what I've been able to find out its a short shaft and that OMC didn't make long shafts till 1957 and thet designated them with an L in the model number. Mine is a 1956 Johnson seahorse 10hp model # QD-17R. The water intake is above the cavitation...

The transom measured right at 15.5 and the motor is a 1956 Johnson seahorse 10 qd-17r it measured 18.5 from top of transom to cavitation plate

You could possibly try zert nuts. Drill a hole insert the zert nut and then screw the bolts in, as they tighten the nuts will contract somewhat like a drain plug giving you a secure fit.
