    Skeg protection

Considering I just broke the skeg completely off my Honda 40 as well as one of the cavitation plates ... causing me to order a new lower unit ..... this thread could not have been more timely. Thanks for posting and keep us updated!! EDIT - Just realized they don't make one for my particular...

Draft difference: Flat bottom vs. Mod Vee

16 vs 14 won't make a difference in draft. Get a 16 if you can. Wider is better. Pretty much any well balanced jon boat (flat front or mod v) will float in a foot of water or even less. Sometimes as little as 6". Like was said above, the motor is what makes all the difference. If you are...

Black Lake NY - Report and Video

Lenny - I fish Marsh Creek a lot. Its a great lake to tool around on with the kids - very pretty. There are definitely some big bass and muskie in the lake, but it gets constant fishing pressure so its kind of hard to catch them. Guys who put in the effort to learn the lake can consistently...

Black Lake NY - Report and Video

cBXp_J1im18 In short, the weather was terrible which made for really tough fishing. We still had fun and did catch enough to make a few nice meals. This lake has treated us well in the past, but this was definitely our worst year every. Oh well, you can't win them all.

How did all of you cut your floor to fit in your V hull boat

    That is an awesome idea!

    1989 LOWE 1242 River-J

I think you'll be fine .... as long as you are OK with losing the flotation. Personally I'd be fine with it, but everyone has to make their own decision.

    20' Lowe Olympic Jon Boat

Just flipped through your entire build. I suppose I could talk about the great paint job, the clean fab work, the properly done electronics etc etc etc etc But all of that pales in comparison to the fact that you HAVE A BATHROOM ON YOUR JONBOAT!!!!! That is freaking awesome!!!! PS - You can...

1959 Memp AP1455 - Tell me what it is!

That boat looks awesome. It has soooo much character! With the nice high sides, you could build a nice casting deck up front and maybe put a flat floor in the rest if it for an open layout with lots of room.

    1989 LOWE 1242 River-J

Do you mean boxes like the one behind the rear seat in this boat? If so, yes they are designed to add additional flotation and also add transom support. But that doesn't mean you can't remove them. It all depends on your boat, how you plan to use and power it, and how comfortable you are...

Carriage bolt holes from previous owner transom work

Pics would help for sure! But generally speaking, you only want to put bolts through holes that are just the right size. If the holes are larger or wonky shaped, then its a good idea to fix it somehow and drill a new, properly sized hole. Ideally you would get welded, but you can get creative...

Easy PVC Rod Holders and bunk slicks

    Great idea, nice job.

    Transom redo: 3m or silicon?

3M 5200 is awesome. I use it to dip all my bolts and rivets in and have never had one leak.

I'm not sure if you can upload a pic, but I host my pics through Picasa Web Albums. Maybe your work doesn't block that site. Time is money, friend.

Keeping boat on trailer, good idea or not?

If its just an open aluminum boat with no wood, electronics, carpet etc etc .... then you can add a plug and leave it out in the elements with no worries. The paint might fade, but it won't hurt anything else.

Live well or no live well?

That through-hull fitting on the left side might indicate there was a factory live well at one point. I agree with the post above though, it all depends on your fishing habits. If you aren't sure you really need one, then you probably don't.

    Weight distribution help

You can certainly move the battery and the fuel tank ..... but you could also consider adding some extra weight to the front of the boat. As long as you aren't overloading it or hurting your speed too much, just buy a couple bags of playground sand and toss them in the front. Or get yourself a...

    New Here

Welcome!!!!! Your questions are good ones, and have been discussed a lot on here. Search through the old build threads and you'll find tons of info. But to get you started, 1. Treated wood has chemicals/metals that react with aluminum and cause corrosion. 2. There is no easy way to remove...

    Putting a kicker on a 14' boat

It depends on how you plan to use it. You said "small lakes and back up". Are the small lakes HP restricted? If not, just use the big motor. If they are restricted, then the kicker would be really nice to have, but cumbersome at the same time. In terms of back up, it depends on the waters...

    Fuel lines..any difference

I've heard that the new fancy stuff isn't as susceptible to ethanol deterioration. If that's true, then I'd spend the extra money for the nicer lines .... your carbs will thank you

I thought about this for a long time and finally got a Humminbird 898c SI HD and a Minn Kota Terrova 80#. I got them installed last week and set up the iPilot link. I took it out on Saturday for the first time .... and HOLY COW its awesome! All the hype is true, this set-up is a true game...
